Frequently Asked Questions

Like any practitioner of medical care, we like our clients to be as informed and aware of our treatment methods as possible, and we’re more than happy to help. Below are some frequently asked questions relating to chiropractic:

Is Chiropractic Treatment Safe?

Chiropractic treatment is an overall safe procedure when administered by a trained and certified chiropractor, but like all medical treatments there are some risks and side effects. Some risks attributed to chiropractic neck manipulation include strokes, cord compressions, blood clots, and fractures, but a 1996 study determined these risks to only occur in 1.46 per million manipulations1. By contrast, you have a greater chance of experiencing injury in the shower or bathtub2.

Why do I feel sore after an adjustment?

Chiropractic treatment involves the stretching of your joints and muscles in order to correctly realign them in their proper positions. This pressure is akin to receiving a rigorous workout, and like a workout a period of soreness is expected as the body accustoms itself to the change. This soreness is completely normal and usually disappears after a few days.

Are Chiropractors doctors?

Chiropractors have Doctorate of Chiropractic (D.C.) degrees, which are obtained from chiropractic colleges. Chiropractic students and medical students go through much the same curriculum, although chiropractors differ by having a greater emphasis on treatment of the spine.

Is chiropractic treatment covered by my medical insurance?

Most major health insurance providers include chiropractic coverage. Stop by for a consultation and we can verify if your plan covers chiropractic care.

What is the “popping” sound I hear when an adjustment is made?

The joints in our bodies may contain gas bubbles that release when the joint is manipulated. This release may produce a “popping” sound, and is completely natural. In fact, it’s no different than when you “crack” your knuckes – that sound is simply the gas being released from the joints as the pressure changes. Contrary to popular belief, this “popping” does not lead to arthritis and is completely safe.
